Manually updating a zoo of software on your work PC is a relic from the 2000s. The UniGetUI utility, arguably the best Winget GUI alternative, solves this pain in one click. Each program typically runs its own background updater, sits in startup, and demands admin rights for every action. Microsoft’s command-line package manager Winget is solid, but not everyone loves living in the terminal.
This is a powerful open-source shell that pulls together Winget, Scoop, and Chocolatey repositories into a single lightweight interface. No ads, telemetry, or bloat—just clean control over your system.
Installation Without Browsers or Installers
Forget downloading .exe files from third-party sites. We’ll install the utility cleanly through the native Windows 11 or 10 terminal.
- Press Win + X and open Terminal (or PowerShell).
- Enter the download command directly from Microsoft servers:
winget install --id SomePythonThings.WingetUIStore -e - Wait a few seconds and launch UniGetUI from the Start menu.
Production Environment Setup
On first launch, the tool will detect all installed package managers.
- Keep Winget absolutely enabled—it handles 90% of core software.
- Keep Scoop enabled—it’s ideal for portable utilities that don’t clutter the registry and leave no traces.
Key sysadmin tweak: Go to Settings ➔ Package Manager Settings and check “Automatically elevate to Administrator”. This eliminates constant UAC pop-ups, and programs will update completely in the background.
Bulk Updates and Blacklists
- Switch to the Software Updates tab. The utility will automatically find everything that’s outdated and show available versions.
- Click the single “Update selected packages” button at the top. Done. Installers download from official mirrors and install silently—no toolbars or unwanted browsers bundled in.
What about software that shouldn’t be updated?
If you have a specific player build or driver that will break from a new patch—right-click it and select “Ignore all updates”. The package goes to the blacklist and won’t bother you again.
Software Backup for Quick Migration
UniGetUI’s killer feature is configuration export. Go to Installed Packages, click the export button, and get one tiny .json file.
If Windows crashes and you need to install a clean OS (or you bought a new laptop), just install UniGetUI, feed it this file through import, go grab coffee, and it will automatically pull and install your entire working software arsenal. Perfect.
