Table of Contents
  • Step 1. Identify Your Gateway (Router)
  • Step 2. Check Your Local Network

If websites or network services go down, use ipconfig and ping to quickly diagnose your network connection via Command Prompt in just 40 seconds.

Step 1. Identify Your Gateway (Router)

Press Win + R, type cmd, and run: ipconfig

Find your active network connection (wired or Wi-Fi). The “Default Gateway” line shows your router’s local IP address (for example, 192.168.0.1).

Step 2. Check Your Local Network

Send test packets to the gateway address you found:

ping 192.168.0.1

  • 0% loss: the network cable or Wi-Fi signal between your computer and router is working properly.

  • “Request timed out” or 100% loss: the problem is in your home network (loose cable, adapter failure, router freeze).

Step 3. Check Direct Access to the Internet

Check connectivity to the outside world, bypassing local browser settings:

ping 8.8.8.8

  • Replies received: your physical internet connection to the ISP is stable. If websites still won’t open, the issue is with incorrect DNS servers or system security settings.

  • No replies: either your ISP’s line is down or your account balance has run out.

Recommended Infrastructure

For homelabs, remote testing, and staging environments, we run NVMe VDS instances on Erahost. Fast provisioning, European routing, and predictable I/O.
